LOWER PHASE CURRICULUM

Our Lower Phase children love to learn. In a secure yet stimulating environment, our teachers deliver an engaging blend of hands-on activities that will nurture your child’s curiosity and creativity - and connect theory to real-world experiences. This ensures our Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 students develop their formative subject knowledge and become confident, independent learners.

EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS) CURRICULUM

In Reception, our children follow the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum.

The EYFS curriculum is a child-initiated, play-based programme, which develops our youngest learners’ skills through seven key learning and development areas. These are: communication and language, physical development, personal, social, and emotional development, literacy, maths, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design.

Our early years specialists encourage exploration, discovery, role-play, critical thinking, and problem-solving, nurturing our students’ phonics, early reading, writing, and maths skills. We’ll also support your child to take the lead and devise their own learning activities.

Learning takes place in bright, colourful Reception classrooms that spark imaginations and provide opportunities for self-expression. Our teachers also create activities that encourage teamwork, collaboration, and physical growth. These include ‘Movement to Music’ and ‘Busy Feet’ sessions.

OUR KEY STAGE 1 CURRICULUM

In Years 1 and 2, our children follow Key Stage 1 of the National Curriculum of England. Learning is broad and varied, providing rich opportunities for our students to explore new concepts, link practical experiences with English and maths, and communicate, connect, and collaborate with friends.

Year 1 builds on the foundations of the EYFS curriculum, as students transition from play-based learning to a more structured approach. As our children work towards personal targets through challenging experiences, they become independent, reflective, and lifelong learners.

In Year 2, our Key Stage 1 students put their blossoming reading, writing, and calculation skills into practice through purposeful, real-life experiences. Our teachers also support learners to self-assess their progress and identify areas they want to develop. This involves setting targets, which creates a structured pathway to success in our Junior Phase.

OUR LOWER PHASE PHONICS PROGRAMME

Our highly successful Lower Phase phonics programme combines two innovative UK approaches: Read Write Inc and Cued Articulation.

A synthetic phonics approach, Read Write Inc will give your child the best possible start to their formal reading, writing, and literacy education. Children learn to ‘read’ the sounds of words and then discover how to write these down. As their knowledge develops, the complexity of the source material increases. This builds confidence and instils a love of reading, language, and literature.

Cued Articulation is a visual and action technique, which involves the use of hand gestures while making sounds. Visualising phonics helps a child to understand how the sound is made, creating memorable links between letters and what they hear.

Reading and phonics are intrinsically linked, and we encourage regular story time at home. Our parents are reading ambassadors, and we can offer lots of support to help you develop positive habits.

OUR LOWER PHASE MATHS PROGRAMME

Our maths mastery approach instils an early love of numeracy and problem-solving.

From Reception, our teachers encourage students to be inquisitive, ask questions, and solve themed mathematical problems, both independently and in groups. The level of challenge increases as our learners move through our National Curriculum of England, ensuring they’re consistently building on existing knowledge and learning new skills.

This incremental approach deepens mathematical understanding and develops the ability to reason, rationalise, and think critically.
